Tonga basket are named after the baTonga tribe who weave the basket. Local palm frond are used in the weaving of these shallow, square bottom basket. A small Tonga basket, with its intricate weave, may take up to 3 days to complete. The dark colored frond are achieved by using tree bark as a dye. The baTonga people still use Tonga basket today for the functional purpose of winnowing grain. Tonga basket make a striking wall or home decor piece or may be used as a functional fruit to vegetable bowl.
